Staff members of the Geological Mapping Laboratory are involved geological and geomorphological research, and their applications in geological mapping in the territory of Poland, among others Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, Nida Basin, Łódź Basin (Bełchatów area), Carpathian Mountains, Wigry National Park. Similar activities abroad are conducted in Germany (Schwäbische Alb), Austria (Zillertal Alps) and Switzerland (Central Swiss Alps). Such broad experience enabled the team to successfully complete work on the following tasks:
- geological mapping, tectonics and structural geology of the sub-Quateranry basement with emphasis on tectonics of the platform regions
- geomorphological mapping based upon both surface mapping (classic fieldwork combined with remote sensing methods) and subsurface data analysis (borehole and geophysical data) resulting in relief maps the sub-Quaternary basement and contour maps of areas with potential for crushed stone resources
- research into lithostratigraphy and biostratigraphy the pre-Quaternary successions, investigations in petrology and diagenesis of carbonate and siliclastic rocks, their diagenesis and palaeoenvironmental reconstructions
- analysis of potential resources of industrial minerals related to fluvial and glacio-fluvial sedimentary environments and their applicability as raw materials for construction industry
- research on recent lake deposits; including lake chalk deposits
- analysis of natural hazards related to karst, suffosion process and modification of riverbed caused by floods
- estimation of the environment changes caused by antropopressure
- recognition and description of glacial and periglacial relief using remote sensing methods
- organization of extra-mural studies and postgraduate courses for Polish and International Students (including UE Erasmus+ and UNESCO Exchange Programs)
International Cooperation
International collaboration in education includes teaching activities conducted by of our staff in the framework of (UE Erasmus+) and UNESCO Exchange Programs as well as postgraduate studies conducted jointly with the following foreign institutions: GeoZentrum Nordbayern, Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Universität Halle-Wittenberg, Universitatea Cluj-Napoca and University of Iceland.
